Add subtitles to a video
Add subtitles to a video automatically, in your browser: Whisper writes them on your own computer, you fix any word, then download SRT or VTT, or the video with the captions burned in.
Drop a video here
MP3 · WAV · M4A · MP4 · MOV · WEBM — up to 3 hours. Nothing is uploaded.
The model downloads once and stays in this browser, so later transcripts start at once and work with Wi-Fi off. Your recording is never uploaded. Free: Fast transcripts without speaker labels, as text, SRT or VTT, no limit. Pro: Accurate, speaker labels, Word, NVivo and MAXQDA files, and the video with the subtitles burned in.
How it works
- Drop the video onto the box above. Fast is free; Accurate makes fewer mistakes (Pro).
- Whisper writes the subtitles on your computer and cuts them into short, readable captions.
- Watch it with the captions on, pick a look and a position, and fix any word in the list.
- Download SRT or VTT for a player or editor, or the video with the captions burned in (Pro).
Subtitles, made on your computer
AudioRinse transcribes the video's sound with Whisper, OpenAI's open speech model, right in your browser: the video isn't uploaded. The words are cut into captions the way broadcasters' guidelines ask for, at most two lines of about 42 characters and a few seconds each, with breaks after sentences and commas where one is close.
Every line is editable while the video plays with the captions over it, and the captions follow your edits. What you see in the preview is exactly what's drawn into the exported video.
Burned in, or as a file
- Burned in (Pro): the captions become part of the picture, so they show everywhere, including apps that don't take a subtitle file. The video is encoded again on your computer as an MP4; the sound is copied as it is.
- SRT: the subtitle file YouTube, Vimeo, Premiere, DaVinci Resolve and most players load. Free with the Fast model.
- VTT: the web's subtitle format, for an HTML5 player or a course platform. Free with the Fast model.
Three looks
- Classic: white text with a dark outline, at the bottom, like TV subtitles.
- Boxed: white text on a dark band, the easiest to read over busy footage.
- Bold: big capitals, a few words at a time, for reels, shorts and TikToks. Put it in the middle to keep it clear of the apps' buttons.
Good to know
Whisper times each sentence or so to about a tenth of a second; within one, the words are spread by their length, so on very fast speech a caption can appear a moment early or late. Burned-in captions use AudioRinse's typeface; for your own font and colours, download the SRT and style it in your editor.
Questions
Is my video uploaded anywhere?
No. The subtitles are written by Whisper inside your browser, and the burned-in video is encoded there too. The video never leaves your computer; the only download is the speech model, the first time.
Is it free?
Yes, with the Fast model: SRT, VTT and text downloads, no limit, no account. Pro ($7.99 a month or $39.99 a year) adds the Accurate model and the video with the subtitles burned in.
Can I edit the subtitles?
Yes. Every line is listed under the video: click into it and change a word, and the captions on the video change with it. Click a line's time to jump there.
How do I add an SRT file to YouTube?
In YouTube Studio, open the video, choose Subtitles, Add language, then Upload file and pick "With timing". Choose the SRT you downloaded here.
Will the burned-in video lose quality?
Very little: the picture is encoded again at a high bitrate, at its own size and frame rate, and the sound is copied untouched. It's quicker than the video plays: 2¼ minutes of 720p video took 23 seconds on a 2020 laptop; 1080p takes about twice as long.
Does it work for vertical phone videos?
Yes. The captions are sized to the narrower side, so they fit a 9:16 video, and the Bold look is made for it.
Which languages does it understand?
Whisper transcribes around 100 languages, most accurately English and the major European languages. Pick the language in the menu, or let it detect it from the first 30 seconds.
How long can the recording be?
Up to 3 hours, audio or video. On a computer with little memory the page takes less, and says so.
