How it works

  1. Drop your MP4 onto the box above. M4A, MOV and other videos work too.
  2. Pick 192 kbps, or 320 for the best quality and 128 for the smallest file.
  3. Download the MP3. The MP4 is read on your device; nothing is uploaded.
  4. Sound noisy or too quiet? One click sends the same file to the noise remover or the loudness normalizer.

What happens to your MP4

An MP4 is a container: a video track and a sound track side by side. AudioRinse reads only the sound track, decodes it and encodes it as MP3. The video is never decoded, which is why a long MP4 takes seconds rather than minutes.

The MP3 keeps the MP4's sample rate (usually 44.1 or 48 kHz) and its stereo.

Is MP3 the best choice?

  • MP3 plays on every phone, car stereo, player and website. Choose it when the file has to work anywhere.
  • Most MP4s from phones, cameras and the web carry AAC sound. The M4A option keeps that sound exactly as it is, with no conversion: identical to the original and smaller than a 320 kbps MP3.
  • For editing in Audacity, Premiere or a DAW, WAV avoids a second round of compression.

Questions

Is my file uploaded anywhere?

No. The conversion runs inside your browser, on your own device. Your file never leaves it, so there's no upload to wait for and nothing stored on a server.

Is it really free?

Yes. Converting is free with no limit, no account and no watermark. AudioRinse earns from its cleaning tools; the converters are here because a recording often needs both.

Which bitrate should I pick?

192 kbps sounds like the original for speech and most music, and it's the default. 320 kbps is the highest MP3 quality, for music you'll keep. 128 kbps makes the smallest file, fine for lectures, podcasts and voice notes.

Does it work on M4A files too?

Yes. An M4A is an MP4 with only sound in it, so it converts the same way.

How long can the file be?

Up to 4 hours. Only the sound is converted, not the picture, so even a long video is quick.

The sound is noisy or too quiet. Can I fix it?

Yes. After converting, one click sends the same file to the background noise remover, the loudness normalizer or the buzz and hum remover. Cleaning is free to try; the free plan includes 3 downloads a month.
