How it works

  1. Drop your M4A onto the box above: a voice memo, a song, a Zoom or GarageBand recording.
  2. WAV is already chosen: 16-bit, at the file's own sample rate and channels.
  3. Download the WAV. It's made on your device; nothing is uploaded.
  4. Sound noisy or too quiet? One click sends the same file to the noise remover or the loudness normalizer.

Why turn an M4A into WAV

Editors, samplers, transcription services and speech tools often ask for WAV: uncompressed, nothing to decode, read the same way everywhere. An M4A holds AAC, which is compact but compressed; the WAV holds the same sound decoded, sample by sample.

AAC files begin with about 20 ms of encoder priming that players skip. AudioRinse skips it too, so the WAV starts where the sound does and is exactly as long as the recording.

What you get

  • 16-bit PCM WAV, which every editor and tool reads.
  • The M4A's own sample rate and channels: a mono voice memo stays mono, stereo stays stereo.
  • About 6 MB per minute of mono at 48 kHz, 11 MB of stereo.

Questions

Is my file uploaded anywhere?

No. The conversion runs inside your browser, on your own device. Your file never leaves it, so there's no upload to wait for and nothing stored on a server.

Is it really free?

Yes. Converting is free with no limit, no account and no watermark. AudioRinse earns from its cleaning tools; the converters are here because a recording often needs both.

Does it work on iPhone voice memos?

Yes. Share the memo from the Voice Memos app (AirDrop it to a Mac, or Save to Files) and drop it here. Memos recorded with Audio Quality set to Lossless are Apple Lossless, which can't be decoded here yet; the default, Compressed, works.

Will the WAV sound better?

No. It holds the M4A's sound exactly, uncompressed. WAV is for editing and compatibility, not quality.

How long can the file be?

Up to 4 hours, and WAVs up to 1 GB: about an hour and a half of stereo. For a longer file the page says so before converting; MP3 or M4A are a fraction of the size.

The sound is noisy or too quiet. Can I fix it?

Yes. After converting, one click sends the same file to the background noise remover, the loudness normalizer or the buzz and hum remover. Cleaning is free to try; the free plan includes 3 downloads a month.
