How it works
- Drop a song onto the box above: MP3, WAV, FLAC, M4A or a video. A whole folder of songs works too.
- AudioRinse listens for the beat on your own device, in a few seconds a song.
- Read the BPM, with half- and double-time, the key and its Camelot code.
- Play the song with a click on every beat to check the count, or download the list as CSV.
How it hears the beat
The finder reads the song's spectrum about 86 times a second and marks every moment the sound gets suddenly louder in some band: a kick, a snare, a strum, a new chord. Those onsets repeat at the beat, so it measures how well the onset pattern lines up with itself at every tempo from 50 to 220 BPM, and keeps the one that lines up best at one, two, three and four beats.
It then places each beat in the song, and the BPM comes from the spacing of all the beats rather than one guess, which is why it reads to a tenth of a BPM: 127.9, not "about 128".
Half-time, double-time, and checking by ear
A song at 140 BPM can also be counted at 70, and a ballad at 70 at 140: both are the same pulse, one counting every beat and the other every second one. The finder gives the count most listeners tap and shows half and double beside it, so you can pick the one your DJ software, DAW or drummer uses.
Press play and a click sounds on every beat it found. If the clicks sit on the kick and snare all the way through, the BPM is right. You can also tap along with the Tap button and compare.
A whole crate at once
- Drop as many songs as you like: each is analysed in turn, and a table fills with BPM, key and Camelot code.
- Download it as CSV for Excel, Numbers or Google Sheets, sorted however you plan your set.
- Pick any row to hear that song with its click.
When the tempo moves
Live drummers drift, and some songs speed up, slow down or change time. The finder follows the beat as it moves and reports the song's main tempo. For a song with no steady pulse, like rubato piano or ambient, it says it found no clear beat instead of making one up.
Questions
Is my song uploaded anywhere?
No. The analysis runs inside your browser, on your own computer. Your songs never leave your device, and nothing is stored on a server. There's no model to download either: it's signal processing, a few seconds a song.
How accurate is the BPM?
We measured it on three standard test sets with hand-labelled tempos, 2,360 songs of electronic, pop, rock, hip-hop, jazz, classical and ballroom music. It counts the labelled tempo on about 7 songs in 10, and on 86 to 96% it's that tempo or exactly half or double it, which the page shows beside it. Steady drums are the easy case (disco 93%, hip-hop 81%); classical and jazz, with no drummer to follow, are the hard one.
Why does it say 70 when I count 140?
They're the same beat counted two ways, and the page shows both. Hip-hop and drum and bass are the usual cases. Use whichever your software expects; for beatmatching, what matters is that both songs are counted the same way.
Can it find the key too?
Yes. Every song gets its key, the Camelot code DJs mix by, the relative key and the tuning. The key finder page leads with them.
Can I analyse a whole folder of songs?
Yes. Choose or drop as many files as you like; they're analysed one after another and listed in a table with BPM, key and Camelot code. Download it as a CSV for Excel, Numbers or Google Sheets.
Which files does it take?
MP3, WAV, FLAC, M4A, AAC, OGG and Opus, and the sound of MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV videos, up to 30 min each.
Is it free?
Yes, with no limit, no account and no watermark: nothing is cleaned or exported, so there's nothing to charge for. AudioRinse earns from its cleaning tools.
