How it works

  1. Drop your MKV onto the box above: an OBS recording, a film, an episode.
  2. Pick 192 kbps, or 320 for music and 128 for the smallest file.
  3. Download the MP3. The MKV is read on your device and never uploaded.
  4. Sound noisy or too quiet? One click sends the same file to the noise remover or the loudness normalizer.

MKV files and their sound

MKV (Matroska) is what OBS Studio records to when a recording must survive a crash, and the usual container for films and episodes. The sound inside varies: AAC from OBS; Dolby Digital (AC-3) or DTS in films; sometimes Opus, Vorbis or FLAC. Browsers don't decode Dolby Digital or DTS on their own, so AudioRinse loads a decoder for them when a file needs one.

Only the sound track is read and converted. The picture is never decoded, which is why even a long MKV converts quickly.

Several sound tracks

An MKV can carry more than one sound track: a film in several languages, or an OBS recording with the microphone and the desktop sound on separate tracks. AudioRinse converts the main one, the track marked as the default that players pick. Surround sound (5.1, 7.1) is mixed down to stereo.

Questions

Is my file uploaded anywhere?

No. The conversion runs inside your browser, on your own device. Your file never leaves it, so there's no upload to wait for and nothing stored on a server.

Is it really free?

Yes. Converting is free with no limit, no account and no watermark. AudioRinse earns from its cleaning tools; the converters are here because a recording often needs both.

Does it work with Dolby Digital (AC-3) and DTS sound?

Yes. Browsers can't decode them, so AudioRinse loads FFmpeg's decoder for them (a few hundred KB, only when a file needs it). Dolby TrueHD tracks, found on some Blu-ray copies, aren't supported.

Which track is converted when there are several?

The one marked as the default, which players pick on their own; usually the first. Surround is mixed down to stereo.

How long can the file be?

Up to 4 hours. Only the sound is converted, not the picture, so even a long video is quick.

The sound is noisy or too quiet. Can I fix it?

Yes. After converting, one click sends the same file to the background noise remover, the loudness normalizer or the buzz and hum remover. Cleaning is free to try; the free plan includes 3 downloads a month.
