Why captions
Most social video is watched with the sound off, and captions keep people watching. They also make a video accessible to deaf and hard-of-hearing viewers, and searchable. Writing them by hand takes longer than the video; Whisper writes them in about the time the video plays.
Captions for reels, shorts and TikToks
- Bold shows a few words at a time in big capitals with a thick outline, the look social video uses. Middle keeps it clear of the like and comment buttons.
- Most social apps don't take a subtitle file you upload, so captions in your own words and style have to be in the picture: download the burned-in video (Pro).
- YouTube does load subtitle files: upload the SRT and viewers can switch the captions on and off.
Private by design
Caption generators usually upload your video to a server. Here the speech model and the video encoder run in your browser, so unreleased videos, client work and personal clips stay on your computer.
Questions
Is my video uploaded anywhere?
No. Whisper writes the captions inside your browser, and the captioned video is encoded there too. The only download is the speech model, the first time.
Is it free?
SRT, VTT and text are free with the Fast model, with no limit and no account. Pro ($7.99 a month or $39.99 a year) adds the Accurate model and the video with the captions burned in.
Can I change the font or colour?
Three looks are built in: Classic, Boxed and Bold, each at the bottom, middle or top. For your own font and colours, download the SRT and style it in CapCut, Premiere or DaVinci Resolve.
Can I highlight each word as it's spoken?
Not yet. Whisper times each phrase rather than each word, so the Bold look shows a few words at a time instead.
Which languages does it understand?
Whisper transcribes around 100 languages, most accurately English and the major European languages. Pick the language in the menu, or let it detect it from the first 30 seconds.
Does it work offline?
Yes. After the first run the page, the engine and the model stay in your browser: turn Wi-Fi off, reload the page and it works the same.
How long can the recording be?
Up to 3 hours, audio or video. On a computer with little memory the page takes less, and says so.
