How it works

  1. Drop your MP3 onto the box above.
  2. WAV is already chosen: 16-bit, at the MP3's own sample rate and channels.
  3. Download the WAV. Nothing is uploaded; it's made on your device.
  4. Sound noisy or too quiet? One click sends the same file to the noise remover or the loudness normalizer.

When you need WAV

  • Editing: Audacity, Premiere, DaVinci Resolve and DAWs work on WAV directly, and saving again adds no new compression.
  • Apps and devices that only take WAV: samplers, some transcription and speech tools, game engines.
  • Burning an audio CD: a 44.1 kHz stereo MP3, the most common kind, becomes a CD-format WAV (44.1 kHz, 16-bit, stereo).

Exact length, no added silence

An MP3 decoder puts out about 25 ms of silence before the sound starts, and the last frame is padded. Encoders such as LAME note both in a tag at the start of the file; AudioRinse reads it, so the WAV starts where the sound does and is as long as the original recording, to the sample. That matters when the WAV goes back next to a video or other tracks.

WAV doesn't add quality: it holds what the MP3 plays, uncompressed. That's why it's 7 to 11 times bigger: 10.6 MB per minute of 44.1 kHz stereo.

Questions

Is my file uploaded anywhere?

No. The conversion runs inside your browser, on your own device. Your file never leaves it, so there's no upload to wait for and nothing stored on a server.

Is it really free?

Yes. Converting is free with no limit, no account and no watermark. AudioRinse earns from its cleaning tools; the converters are here because a recording often needs both.

Will the WAV sound better than the MP3?

No. What the MP3 encoder left out is gone; the WAV holds exactly what the MP3 plays. Converting is for editing and compatibility, not quality.

What sample rate and bit depth is the WAV?

The MP3's own sample rate (usually 44.1 kHz, sometimes 48), so nothing is resampled, at 16 bits, which hold everything an MP3 carries.

How long can the file be?

Up to 4 hours, and WAVs up to 1 GB: about an hour and a half of stereo. For a longer file the page says so before converting; MP3 or M4A are a fraction of the size.

The sound is noisy or too quiet. Can I fix it?

Yes. After converting, one click sends the same file to the background noise remover, the loudness normalizer or the buzz and hum remover. Cleaning is free to try; the free plan includes 3 downloads a month.
