How it works

  1. Drop your FLAC onto the box above: a CD rip, a hi-res download, a 24-bit recording.
  2. Pick 320 kbps for music you'll listen to closely, or 192 for a smaller file.
  3. Download the MP3. The title, artist, album and cover art come along.
  4. Sound noisy or too quiet? One click sends the same file to the noise remover or the loudness normalizer.

Lossless to MP3

FLAC is lossless: it holds a CD or studio recording exactly, at about half the size of a WAV. That's still around 30 MB for a four-minute song, which fills a phone quickly, and some cars, players and apps don't play FLAC at all.

An MP3 at 320 kbps is the best an MP3 gets, about a third of the FLAC's size, and most listeners can't tell them apart. Keep the FLAC as your original and carry the MP3s.

Hi-res and 24-bit FLAC

  • 24-bit FLACs are read at full precision before encoding.
  • MP3 goes up to 48 kHz, so 88.2, 96 and 192 kHz files are resampled to 48 kHz. Nothing you can hear is lost.
  • The title, artist, album, track number and cover art are copied into the MP3.

Questions

Is my file uploaded anywhere?

No. The conversion runs inside your browser, on your own device. Your file never leaves it, so there's no upload to wait for and nothing stored on a server.

Is it really free?

Yes. Converting is free with no limit, no account and no watermark. AudioRinse earns from its cleaning tools; the converters are here because a recording often needs both.

320 or 192 kbps?

320 kbps for music you'll keep and listen to closely; it's the highest MP3 quality. 192 kbps sounds the same to most people on most headphones, and the file is 40% smaller.

Can I convert a whole album at once?

Not yet: one file at a time. Each song takes a few seconds.

Are the tags and cover art kept?

Yes. The title, artist, album, track number and cover image are copied into the MP3's tags.

How long can the file be?

Up to 4 hours. It converts many times faster than it plays: an hour of audio takes a few minutes.

The sound is noisy or too quiet. Can I fix it?

Yes. After converting, one click sends the same file to the background noise remover, the loudness normalizer or the buzz and hum remover. Cleaning is free to try; the free plan includes 3 downloads a month.
