Split a song into stems

Split any song into four stems in your browser: vocals, drums, bass and everything else. An AI model separates them on your own computer. Free, no upload.

How it works

  1. Drop a song onto the box above: MP3, WAV, M4A, FLAC, or a video.
  2. An AI model separates it into vocals, drums, bass and other on your computer. The first time, the model downloads once.
  3. Listen, switching each stem on and off: solo the bass, mute the drums.
  4. Download all four stems in a ZIP, or just the mix you're hearing, as MP3, M4A or WAV.

The four stems

  • Vocals: the lead and the backing vocals, with their reverb.
  • Drums: the kit and most percussion.
  • Bass: bass guitar, synth bass, the low end.
  • Other: everything else, from guitars and piano to strings, synths and pads.

How it splits a song

AudioRinse runs HTDemucs, Meta's open source-separation model, in your browser: a neural network trained on hundreds of songs recorded as separate tracks, so it learned what a voice, a kit, a bass and the rest each sound like in a finished mix. It works on the sound wave and its spectrum at once, which keeps drum hits sharp and bass notes full. It runs on your graphics chip through WebGPU where the browser has it, and on the processor where it doesn't.

Each stem is a full-length track that lines up with the song sample for sample, so you can drop them into any editor or DAW side by side.

Getting good stems

  • Start from the best copy you have: a WAV, FLAC or high-bitrate MP3 splits more cleanly than a low-bitrate rip.
  • Guitars, piano and keys share Other: the model has no separate stem for them.
  • For the cleanest vocals or instrumental alone, the vocal remover can use a second, sharper model (Best quality) that separates only those two.

What it's for

Remixes and DJ edits, practising your part with the rest of the band, learning a bass line or a drum fill by ear, sampling, or hearing how a mix was put together. Separating a song doesn't change who owns it: use the stems for your own practice, or with the rights holder's permission when you publish.

Questions

Is my song uploaded anywhere?

No. The separation model runs inside your browser, on your own computer. Your song never leaves your device, so there's no upload to wait for and nothing stored on a server. The only download is the model itself, the first time.

Can it separate the guitar or the piano?

Not on their own: they come out together in Other, with every instrument that isn't drums or bass. Switch Other on alone to hear them.

Do the stems add back up to the song?

Very nearly. On the MUSDB18 test songs the four stems played together differ from the original by about 0.1% of its energy (30 dB down), so they sound like the song. What's missing from all four is mostly reverb tails and noise.

Can I download just the mix I'm hearing?

Yes. Switch the stems you want on and the others off: the download button names what you hear, say 'vocals, bass and other', and saves that mix as one file.

Does it work on a video?

Yes. Drop the video: its sound is split, and you can download the video with the stems you switched on as its sound, the picture copied as it is.

How fast is it?

It depends on your graphics chip. A 4-minute song takes about 50 seconds on a gaming laptop's graphics card and about 3½ minutes on a 2020 laptop's built-in graphics; Best quality takes about three times as long where it's offered. Without WebGPU (some browsers, older computers) it runs on the processor: about 7 minutes on an 8-core laptop. The page shows the time left as it goes.

Why does the first song take longer?

The model downloads once: 126 MB for Standard, 464 MB for Best. It stays in your browser, so the next song starts at once, and it works with Wi-Fi off from then on.

How long can the song be?

Up to 15 min. Free downloads cover songs up to 10 minutes. On a computer with little memory the page takes less, and says so when you drop a longer file.

Is it free?

Separating and listening are free and unlimited. You get 3 free downloads a month for songs up to 10 minutes (1 without an account), and all the stems of one song count as one download. Pro adds unlimited downloads, songs up to 15 min and video.
