How it works

  1. Drop your voice recording onto the box above: a podcast, a voice-over, a vocal.
  2. AudioRinse finds every S, SH and Z on your device and turns down only its hiss.
  3. Compare with the original. Light for a gentle touch, Strong for a piercing microphone.
  4. Download the de-essed file. Stereo stays stereo, and a video keeps its picture.

Before / after

Hear it before you drop anything

“After” is AudioRinse at its default settings. The voice is synthetic, so we can share it freely.

This recording was made bright, so its S sounds hiss; after, they're softened.

What sibilance is

Sibilance is the hiss in S, SH, Z and soft C sounds: a burst of energy between about 4.5 and 11 kHz. Bright microphones, a mouth close to the mic, heavy compression and some voices make it piercing, and earbuds make it worse.

How it works

It scores every 11 milliseconds of the recording by how much the 4.5 to 11 kHz band outweighs the voice below it, and takes its threshold from your recording itself, so a naturally bright voice isn't treated as one long S. When an S crosses it, only the band above 4.5 kHz is lowered, by up to 4, 7 or 10 dB depending on the strength, and brought back over 40 ms as the S ends.

On vowels the treble changes by about a tenth of a decibel, so the voice keeps its air and clarity.

When to use it

  • Podcasts and voice-overs recorded on a bright condenser microphone.
  • After the audio enhancer or heavy compression, which bring sibilance up.
  • It's made for voice. On a full song, hi-hats and cymbals can be taken for S sounds.

Questions

Is my recording uploaded anywhere?

No. AudioRinse runs the cleaning model inside your browser, on your own computer. Your file never leaves your device, so there's no upload to wait for and nothing stored on a server.

Will it make my voice dull?

No. It only acts while an S is sounding, and only above 4.5 kHz; between S sounds nothing changes. On vowels the treble moves by about a tenth of a decibel.

Light, Medium or Strong?

Medium (up to 7 dB) suits most recordings. Light (4 dB) is enough when the S sounds are only a little sharp; Strong (10 dB) is for a microphone that makes every S hiss.

Does it remove plosives or mouth clicks?

No. Plosives (P and B pops) are low thumps and clicks are short ticks; this only softens sibilance. The mouth click remover takes the clicks.

Is it free?

Cleaning and listening are free and unlimited. You get 3 free downloads a month for audio files up to 10 minutes (1 without an account). Pro adds unlimited downloads, files up to 1 hour and video.
