Mouth clicks were added to this voice-over, the way a dry mouth makes them; after, they're gone.

What mouth clicks are

Short, sharp ticks from a dry or wet mouth: the tongue leaving the palate, lips parting, saliva. A microphone close to the mouth picks up every one. In a voice-over or an audiobook they're distracting, and audiobook platforms such as ACX flag mouth noise.

How it works

AudioRinse listens above 3 kHz, where a click stands out from the voice, for moments the sound just before couldn't predict: a sudden burst that stands alone, not one of the regular pulses a voice makes. Each click, a few milliseconds long, is redrawn from the sound on either side by least-squares interpolation from a model of that sound, so nothing is cut and the timing stays exactly as it was.

In our tests on speech with clicks added, Standard found 94 to 97% of the clicks in the pauses, where they're heard most, and left click-free speech untouched.

What it leaves alone

  • Breaths and long lip smacks: they last longer than a click.
  • Plosives (P and B pops): low thumps, not ticks.
  • A click right inside a loud vowel is mostly hidden by the voice. Gentle and Standard leave the ones they can't tell from it; Strong takes more of them.

Questions

Is my recording uploaded anywhere?

No. AudioRinse runs the cleaning model inside your browser, on your own computer. Your file never leaves your device, so there's no upload to wait for and nothing stored on a server.

Will it cut my audio?

No. Each click is replaced by a few milliseconds drawn from the sound around it, so the file stays exactly as long as it was and a video stays in sync.

Gentle, Standard or Strong?

Standard suits most voice recordings: it takes the clicks in the pauses and the clear ones under the voice. Gentle takes only the clearest. Strong also goes after clicks under loud speech; compare with the original, since a repair inside a word is only approximate.

Does it remove breaths?

No. Breaths are much longer than a click and it leaves them as they are.
