Interview transcription
Transcribe interviews with speaker labels and timestamps, right in your browser. Whisper runs on your own computer: the recording is never uploaded, and it works offline.
Drop an interview here
MP3 · WAV · M4A · MP4 · MOV · WEBM — up to 3 hours. Nothing is uploaded.
The model downloads once and stays in this browser, so later transcripts start at once and work with Wi-Fi off. Your recording is never uploaded. Free: Fast transcripts without speaker labels, as text, SRT or VTT, no limit. Pro: Accurate, speaker labels, Word, NVivo and MAXQDA files.
How it works
- Pick Accurate or Fast, and how many people speak. The model downloads once, then stays in your browser.
- Drop the recording onto the box above: audio or video, up to 3 hours. It's transcribed on your computer.
- Read along: click a line to hear it, name the speakers, fix any word.
- Download it for Word, NVivo, MAXQDA or ATLAS.ti, as subtitles, or as plain text.
Why transcribe on your own computer
Interviews are often the most sensitive data a project holds: names, health, work, family. Cloud transcription services receive the recording, keep it on their servers and process it under their own terms, which is why many universities and companies tell staff not to upload interviews to them.
This tool sends nothing. OpenAI's open Whisper model and the speaker detection run inside your browser, on your own processor and graphics chip. The only download is the model itself, the first time. After that the page works with Wi-Fi switched off, which is the simplest way to check the claim yourself. The data-flow statement lists every request the page makes.
How accurate it is
We tested it on three recorded hour-long interviews with professional reference transcripts. Accurate (Whisper large-v3-turbo) got 8.3% of words wrong, on a par with desktop Whisper tools run on the same files. Most of the difference from the reference is "um", "uh" and repeated words, which Whisper leaves out.
Speaker labels held for the whole hour: fewer than 2 words in 100 were given to the wrong speaker. Telling the tool how many people speak helps; two is the right answer for most interviews.
Getting a good transcript
- Record close to each speaker. A phone in the middle of a table works; a phone in a pocket doesn't.
- Quiet rooms beat expensive microphones. If the recording is noisy, run it through the background noise remover first: cleaner audio means fewer wrong words.
- Pick the language if you know it. Detection reads the first 30 seconds, and a greeting in another language can mislead it.
- Check names, places and technical terms. Whisper spells them the way they sound; click the line, listen, and fix it in place.
What your computer needs
Accurate is fastest in Chrome or Edge on a computer with WebGPU: on a 2020 laptop's built-in graphics it transcribed an hour-long interview in about an hour, while the speakers were found in parallel. Newer laptops are faster. Without WebGPU it runs on the processor, more slowly.
Fast (Whisper small) runs on the processor at about twice real time and downloads 249 MB instead of about 560 MB. 8 GB of memory is enough for a three-hour recording.
Questions
Is my recording uploaded anywhere?
No. The speech model and the speaker detection run inside your browser, on your own computer. The recording and the transcript never leave it. The only download is the model, once; the data-flow statement lists everything the page loads.
Does it really work offline?
Yes. After your first transcript the page, the engine and the model are kept in your browser. Turn Wi-Fi off, reload the page and transcribe: it works the same.
How long does it take?
On a computer with a recent graphics chip, about as long as the recording, or less: an hour-long interview took about an hour on a 2020 laptop's built-in graphics. Fast mode runs at about twice real time on the processor. The first time also downloads the model.
Can I name the speakers?
Yes. The transcript says Speaker 1, Speaker 2 and so on, in the order they first speak; type a name once and every line by that speaker changes.
Which languages does it understand?
Whisper transcribes around 100 languages. It's most accurate in English and the major European languages; pick the language in the menu, or let it detect it from the first 30 seconds.
Is it free?
Fast transcripts without speaker labels are free as text, SRT or VTT, with no limit and no account. Pro ($7.99 a month or $39.99 a year) adds downloads of Accurate and speaker-labelled transcripts, and Word, NVivo and MAXQDA files. The same Pro covers every AudioRinse tool.
