How it works

Muted for good, not just turned down
Pressing mute in a player only silences it on your screen; the sound is still in the file, and plays again for whoever you send it to. This takes the sound track out of the file itself, so the video is silent everywhere: in a message, on a website, in an editor or after an upload.
The picture isn't touched. It's copied into the new file packet for packet, without being compressed again, so it looks exactly like the original and a long video is done in seconds. A phone video keeps its rotation and its format: a MOV stays a MOV.
When a silent video is what you want

Keep some of the sound instead

Not here: this takes out the whole sound track. To quiet one stretch, use a video editor; to take out noise or music and keep the voices, use the noise remover for video or remove music from video.
