How it works

  1. Drop your video onto the box above: MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV, up to 2 GB.
  2. Check what's in it: the format, the picture's size and length, and whether it has sound.
  3. Press Download without sound. The picture is copied as it is, so it takes seconds, even for a long video.
  4. Play the result on the page to check it's silent, then share or edit it.

What happens to your video

The sound track is left out and the picture is copied across packet for packet. Nothing is decoded or compressed again, so the quality is exactly the original's, the file only gets smaller, and an hour of video takes seconds rather than minutes.

The video keeps its format where it can: an iPhone's MOV comes back as a MOV, a WebM as a WebM, an MP4 as an MP4. The rotation of a phone video is kept too, so it plays the right way up.

It all happens in your browser. The video isn't uploaded, so there's no upload to wait for, no file size charge and no copy left on anyone's server.

Why people take the sound out

  • Background music that would get a video muted or claimed on YouTube, Instagram or TikTok
  • Wind, traffic or other people's voices in a phone video, to put new music or a voice-over on
  • B-roll and stock footage for an edit, where only the picture is wanted
  • A screen recording that picked up the microphone or system sounds by mistake
  • A clip to share without the conversation that happened behind the camera

Only part of the sound is the problem?

Taking out the whole sound track also takes out the voices. To keep what people say, the background noise remover for video takes out wind, traffic and hum and leaves the speech, and remove music from video takes out the music and keeps the voices. To keep the sound and lose the picture instead, extract the audio as an MP3 or M4A.

Questions

Is my video uploaded anywhere?

No. The sound is taken out inside your browser, on your own device. The video never leaves it, so there's no upload to wait for and nothing stored on a server.

Does it lose quality?

No. The picture isn't re-encoded: its packets are copied into the new file as they are, so it's identical to the original, frame for frame.

Is it free?

Yes, with no limit, no account and no watermark. AudioRinse earns from its cleaning tools; this one is here because a video often needs its sound fixed or replaced.

Which formats work?

MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV, with H.264, HEVC, VP8, VP9, AV1 or ProRes pictures, up to 2 GB. The file comes back in the same format; a picture its format can't hold is put in an MP4 or MOV instead.

Can I remove the music but keep the voices?

Yes, with remove music from video: a separation model keeps the voices and takes out the music. To take out noise and keep the voices, use the noise remover for video.
