Record your voice

MP3 · M4A · WAV — up to 1 hour. Nothing is uploaded.

How it works

  1. Press Start recording and allow the microphone when the browser asks. With more than one microphone, pick one first.
  2. Speak. The bars show how loud you're coming in; pause and carry on as often as you like.
  3. Press Stop, listen back, name the file and download it as MP3, M4A or WAV.
  4. Noise, echo or a quiet voice? One click sends the recording to the noise remover, the voice enhancer or the transcriber.

What it records

Your microphone, as it is. The sound goes from the microphone into a recording in your browser, in mono at 48 kHz, and nothing is sent anywhere. The browser's own noise suppression, echo cancellation and automatic level are off unless you tick the box under the button: they're made for video calls, and they can make a voice sound watery or pumping, which you can't undo afterwards.

While you record, the recording is also saved in your browser's storage on this computer every few seconds. If the tab closes, the browser crashes or the page reloads, open the page again and it offers the recording up to that moment. It stays there until you start a new recording or delete it.

Getting a good recording

  • Get close: a hand's width or two from the microphone beats across the room. Distance adds room echo, and no cleanup removes it completely.
  • Watch the bars. The loudest words should reach near the top without staying pinned there; the page warns you when the sound clips or is very quiet.
  • A headset or USB microphone beats a laptop's built-in one, which also hears the keyboard and the fan. Pick it from the Microphone list.
  • Soft rooms sound better: curtains, a sofa or a rug echo less than a kitchen or an empty office.
  • On a phone, keep the page open: the page asks to keep the screen on while you record, since a phone that locks stops the microphone.

After recording

The download is the recording itself, with nothing taken out. If the room was noisy, the background noise remover takes out fans, traffic and hum; the voice enhancer also evens out the level for a podcast or a voice-over; remove echo helps in a bare room. To get the words, transcribe it: Whisper writes it out on your computer, also without an upload.

Each of those is one click from the recording, with the same audio, so there's nothing to download and drop again.

Questions

Is my recording uploaded anywhere?

No. It's recorded in your browser and kept on your own device; nothing is sent to a server, not even to make the download. Cleaning it or transcribing it afterwards runs on your device too.

Is it free?

Yes. Recording and downloading are free with no limit, no account and no watermark. Cleaning a recording afterwards is free to try, with 3 free downloads a month; Pro ($7.99 a month or $39.99 a year) makes them unlimited.

How long can a recording be?

Up to 1 hour. On a computer with little memory it's less, and the recording stops there with everything up to then kept.

What happens if I close the tab while recording?

Nothing is lost but the last few seconds. The recording is saved on your device as you go; open the page again and it offers the recording up to the moment the tab closed.

The browser doesn't let the page use the microphone. What do I do?

Click the microphone or the lock icon in the address bar, allow the microphone for audiorinse.com and press Start recording again. On a Mac, also check System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone for your browser; on Windows, Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes, in Chrome on Android and Safari on iPhone. Keep the page open while you record: switching to another app can stop the microphone.
