Increase video volume

Make a quiet video louder, up to four times as loud, without clipping. The picture is copied untouched; only the sound changes. In your browser, nothing uploaded.

MP3 · WAV · M4A · MP4 · MOV · WEBM — up to 60 min. Nothing is uploaded.

How it works

  1. Drop the video onto the box above: MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV, from a phone, a camera or a screen recorder.
  2. AudioRinse measures how loud its sound is and boosts it to Auto, as loud as YouTube plays, on your device.
  3. Still too quiet? Pick +10 or +20 dB, and switch between the original and the boosted sound.
  4. Download the video with the louder sound and its picture copied untouched (Pro), or the sound alone for free.

Before / after

Hear it before you drop anything

“After” is AudioRinse at its default settings. The voice is synthetic, so we can share it freely.

This recording came out at −30 LUFS, far below podcast level; after, it's at −16.

Only the sound changes

The picture is copied packet for packet, not encoded again, so it keeps its exact quality, frame rate and size, and the download takes seconds rather than minutes. Only the sound track is new, and it stays in sync with the picture.

The download is an MP4, which plays on every phone and computer and uploads to YouTube, Instagram and TikTok as it is.

Why videos come out quiet

  • Phone videos filmed from across a room: the microphone is at the camera, not at the person talking.
  • Screen recordings and Zoom or Teams recordings, which often save the voice well below a normal level.
  • Videos exported from an editor with the voice turned down to make room for music.

How much to boost

  • Auto brings the file to −14 LUFS, the level YouTube and Spotify play at: loud, with room left for the peaks. A file that's already that loud stays as it is.
  • +6 dB sounds about 1.5 times as loud, +10 dB about twice and +20 dB about four times: every 10 dB roughly doubles how loud it sounds.
  • Start with Auto, play the loudest part, and go up a step only if it's still too quiet. The numbers under the result show where it started and where it landed.

When louder isn't enough

A boost turns up everything in the sound together. If the voice is lost under fan noise or traffic, the background noise remover for video takes that out first. If it's lost under music, the music remover turns the music down and leaves the voices as they are.

Questions

Is my file uploaded anywhere?

No. AudioRinse measures and boosts it inside your browser, on your own device. Your file never leaves it, so there's no upload to wait for and nothing stored on a server.

Is it free?

Boosting the video and downloading its sound as MP3, M4A or WAV are free, with no limit and no account. The video download, with the louder sound and the picture copied as it is, is part of Pro ($7.99 a month or $39.99 a year), which covers every AudioRinse tool.

Will it distort?

It won't clip: nothing is pushed past full scale. Where the boost would take a peak over −1 dBTP, a look-ahead limiter turns down just that peak, for a few milliseconds, and the page shows by how much. A few dB of that goes unnoticed. Past about 12 dB, drums and plosives lose their punch; a smaller boost keeps it.

Does the picture lose quality?

No. The picture is copied as it is, not encoded again; only the sound track is replaced.

Which videos does it take?

MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV, from phones, cameras, screen recorders and video calls, up to 1 hour. On a computer with little memory the page takes less, and says so. The download is an MP4.

Can I make just the voice louder?

A boost turns up the whole sound track. To bring a voice up over music, use the music remover and turn the music down; to bring it up over noise, use the noise remover for video.
