Volume booster

Make a quiet recording or video louder, up to four times as loud, without clipping: a limiter holds the peaks under −1 dB. Free with no limit, in your browser.

How it works

  1. Drop your file onto the box above: MP3, M4A, WAV or any other audio, or a video.
  2. AudioRinse measures how loud it is on your device and boosts it to Auto, as loud as YouTube plays.
  3. Still too quiet? Pick +10 or +20 dB, and switch between the original and the boosted sound to compare.
  4. Download it as MP3, M4A or WAV, free with no limit. Stereo stays stereo.

Before / after

Hear it before you drop anything

“After” is AudioRinse at its default settings. The voice is synthetic, so we can share it freely.

This recording came out at −30 LUFS, far below podcast level; after, it's at −16.

How much to boost

  • Auto brings the file to −14 LUFS, the level YouTube and Spotify play at: loud, with room left for the peaks. A file that's already that loud stays as it is.
  • +6 dB sounds about 1.5 times as loud, +10 dB about twice and +20 dB about four times: every 10 dB roughly doubles how loud it sounds.
  • Start with Auto, play the loudest part, and go up a step only if it's still too quiet. The numbers under the result show where it started and where it landed.

Louder without clipping

Turning a file up in most editors multiplies every sample, and the peaks that end up past full scale are cut flat: that's the crackle of an over-boosted file. Here the boost goes through a look-ahead limiter. It sees each peak coming 5 milliseconds ahead and turns down just that peak, so the rest of the sound gets the whole boost.

It checks the peaks at 4 times the sample rate, including the points between samples, where converting to MP3 or AAC would otherwise clip. The result stays under −1 dBTP, the headroom YouTube, Spotify and podcast apps ask for.

Volume booster or loudness normalizer?

Use the booster when a file is simply too quiet and you want it louder, by as much as it takes. Use the loudness normalizer when it has to land on a standard, like −16 LUFS for a podcast or −23 for broadcast; it turns a file down, too.

A boost turns everything in the file up together. If a voice is quiet next to loud music, the music remover can turn the music down under it; if one speaker is quieter than another, the audio enhancer evens them out.

Questions

Is my file uploaded anywhere?

No. AudioRinse measures and boosts it inside your browser, on your own device. Your file never leaves it, so there's no upload to wait for and nothing stored on a server.

Is it free?

Yes. Boosting, listening and downloading the sound as MP3, M4A or WAV are free, with no limit and no account, for files up to 1 hour. Pro ($7.99 a month or $39.99 a year) adds the video download, with the picture copied as it is, and many files at once.

Will it distort?

It won't clip: nothing is pushed past full scale. Where the boost would take a peak over −1 dBTP, a look-ahead limiter turns down just that peak, for a few milliseconds, and the page shows by how much. A few dB of that goes unnoticed. Past about 12 dB, drums and plosives lose their punch; a smaller boost keeps it.

How loud can it go?

Up to +20 dB, about four times as loud. How much of that you hear depends on the file: one with sharp peaks, like drum hits or a door slam, has less room, and the limiter takes back more of the boost. The numbers under the result show how loud it came out, in LUFS.

Does it work on videos?

Yes. Drop an MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV: the sound is boosted, and you can download it free as MP3, M4A or WAV, or as the video with its picture copied untouched (video downloads are part of Pro). The video volume page has more on that.

Will background noise get louder too?

Yes: a boost turns up everything in the file, hiss and hum included. Take out the background noise or the hum first, then boost the cleaned file.

Can I boost several files at once?

Yes, with Pro: drop them all, and each gets the boost you picked, one after another on your device.
