Drop audio or video here

MP3 · WAV · M4A · MP4 · MOV · WEBM — up to 1 hour. Nothing is uploaded.

How it works

  1. Drop your file onto the box above: MP3, M4A, WAV, FLAC or any other audio, or the sound of a video.
  2. Drag the two handles to the part you want, or type the start and end times. Arrow keys move a handle by a tenth of a second.
  3. Keep that part or cut it out, and add a fade in or out if you like. Play it to hear exactly what you'll get.
  4. Download it as MP3, M4A or WAV, free with no limit.

Keep a part, or cut one out

Keep it saves only the selection: a clip from a long recording, a verse from a song, the answer you need from an interview. Cut it out removes the selection and joins what's on either side: a cough, a mistake, an ad break in a podcast.

Where the two sides meet, they're crossfaded over 10 milliseconds. That's too short to hear as a fade, and long enough that the join doesn't click.

Cutting in the right place

  • Move a handle while it plays: playback jumps to just before the edge you moved, so you hear where it now falls.
  • Type a time to a tenth of a second, as 1:05.3 or 65.3, in Start and End.
  • Click a handle and use the arrow keys: a tenth of a second a press, a whole second with Shift.
  • Cut where it's quiet. A cut in the middle of a word or a note is heard; one in a pause or between beats isn't.

Fades

A cut that lands mid-sound starts or stops abruptly. A fade in or out of half a second, 2 or 5 seconds smooths it: the start of a song excerpt, the end of a clip. The fades follow an equal-power curve, so they sound even instead of dropping away at the last moment.

Questions

Is my file uploaded anywhere?

No. AudioRinse cuts it inside your browser, on your own device. Your file never leaves it, so there's no upload to wait for and nothing stored on a server.

Is it free?

Yes, with no limit, no account and no watermark. AudioRinse earns from its cleaning tools; the cutter is here because a recording often needs both.

Does cutting lower the quality?

A WAV loses nothing. An MP3 or M4A is encoded once more, at 192 kbps, more than most MP3s are made at, so the part you keep sounds as it did. To keep editing it, download a WAV.

Can I cut out more than one part?

Yes, one at a time: cut out the first part, download it, and drop the download in again for the next. Each cut is encoded once more; download WAVs in between to lose nothing.

Can I cut the sound of a video?

Yes. Drop an MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV: the cutter takes its sound and saves the part you choose as audio. It doesn't cut the picture.

How long can the file be?

Up to 1 hour. On a computer with little memory the page takes less, and says so.
