How it works

  1. Drop your recording onto the box above: a voice memo, a podcast, a song, or the sound of a video.
  2. Drag the start handle past what you don't want at the beginning, and the end handle back from the end.
  3. Add a short fade in or out if a cut lands mid-sound, and play it to check.
  4. Download it as MP3, M4A or WAV, free with no limit.

Trimming the start and the end

Most recordings start with a few seconds of setting up and end with reaching for the stop button. Drag the start handle to just before the first word or note, and the end handle to just after the last. The bars of the waveform show where the sound starts; play from a handle to check you haven't clipped it.

If a trim lands mid-sound, a half-second fade makes it sound intended rather than chopped.

Trimmed, and then

  • Pauses all through the recording? The silence remover shortens every one of them at once, in sync with a video's picture.
  • Too quiet once trimmed? The volume booster brings it up without clipping.
  • Noisy? The background noise remover takes the noise out and keeps the voice.

Cutting in the right place

  • Move a handle while it plays: playback jumps to just before the edge you moved, so you hear where it now falls.
  • Type a time to a tenth of a second, as 1:05.3 or 65.3, in Start and End.
  • Click a handle and use the arrow keys: a tenth of a second a press, a whole second with Shift.
  • Cut where it's quiet. A cut in the middle of a word or a note is heard; one in a pause or between beats isn't.

Questions

Is my file uploaded anywhere?

No. AudioRinse cuts it inside your browser, on your own device. Your file never leaves it, so there's no upload to wait for and nothing stored on a server.

Is it free?

Yes, with no limit, no account and no watermark. AudioRinse earns from its cleaning tools; the cutter is here because a recording often needs both.

Does cutting lower the quality?

A WAV loses nothing. An MP3 or M4A is encoded once more, at 192 kbps, more than most MP3s are made at, so the part you keep sounds as it did. To keep editing it, download a WAV.

Can it trim silence automatically?

The trimmer cuts where you put the handles. To shorten every pause in a recording at once, use the silence remover.

Can I cut the sound of a video?

Yes. Drop an MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV: the cutter takes its sound and saves the part you choose as audio. It doesn't cut the picture.

How long can the file be?

Up to 1 hour. On a computer with little memory the page takes less, and says so.
