How it works

  1. Drop the MP3 onto the box above. M4A, WAV, FLAC and other audio work too.
  2. Drag the two handles to the part you want, or type the start and end times to a tenth of a second.
  3. Keep that part or cut it out, add a fade if you like, and play it to hear the result.
  4. Download the new MP3, free with no limit.

Cut to the sample, with fades

An MP3 is stored in frames of about 26 milliseconds, and tools that cut it without decoding can only cut between frames, with no fades. AudioRinse decodes the MP3, cuts it exactly where you put the handles, adds any fades, and encodes the part you keep once, at 192 kbps.

192 kbps is more than most MP3s are made at, so the cut sounds as the original did. If you'll keep editing it, download a WAV, which loses nothing, and make the MP3 at the end.

What people cut MP3s for

  • A ringtone from a song: the ringtone maker starts on 30 seconds and saves an iPhone M4R too.
  • A clip of a podcast or an interview to share or quote.
  • The intro of a song for a video, faded out at the end.
  • A voice memo without the fumbling at the start and the end. For the pauses in between, the silence remover shortens every one at once.

Cutting in the right place

  • Move a handle while it plays: playback jumps to just before the edge you moved, so you hear where it now falls.
  • Type a time to a tenth of a second, as 1:05.3 or 65.3, in Start and End.
  • Click a handle and use the arrow keys: a tenth of a second a press, a whole second with Shift.
  • Cut where it's quiet. A cut in the middle of a word or a note is heard; one in a pause or between beats isn't.

Questions

Is my file uploaded anywhere?

No. AudioRinse cuts it inside your browser, on your own device. Your file never leaves it, so there's no upload to wait for and nothing stored on a server.

Is it free?

Yes, with no limit, no account and no watermark. AudioRinse earns from its cleaning tools; the cutter is here because a recording often needs both.

Will the MP3 lose quality?

Very little: it's decoded once and encoded once, at 192 kbps, a higher rate than most MP3s are made at. To lose nothing at all, download a WAV.

Does it keep the title and cover art?

No: the new file has the sound only. Most music apps let you add the title and cover again.

How long can the file be?

Up to 1 hour. On a computer with little memory the page takes less, and says so.
